Following the passage of the ľ¹ÏÖ±²¥ Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) in 1971, 12 regional and over 200 village corporations were established by ľ¹ÏÖ±²¥ Natives across the state. There was a 13th regional corporation for ľ¹ÏÖ±²¥ Native people residing outside ľ¹ÏÖ±²¥; however, it was dissolved in 2013 and has not yet been re-established. The corporations serve to manage the financial and land assets allocated through ANCSA to the state's regions and have grown into a powerful economic force.
